Battery storage Darwin

Battery Storage in Darwin.

Solar covers the day. A battery covers the evening — which in Darwin is when the air conditioning is still running and everyone is home. If you already have solar and you are exporting most of it for a feed-in rate you would not accept from anyone else, a battery is the obvious next move.

Be Careful How the Rebate Is Quoted to You

The federal battery rebate is real and it is worth having. But it applies to the installed system, not the shiny bit — and some quotes are written to make it look far bigger than it is by comparing it against the battery module price alone.

Against the full installed stack — battery, controller, switchgear, labour and commissioning — the rebate covers roughly forty per cent, not eighty. That is still a very good discount. Just make sure you are comparing quotes on the same basis, including ours.

What a Battery Actually Changes

Three honest points before you commit.

1

It Shifts Power, It Does Not Make It

A battery stores what your panels already produced. If your system is undersized, adding a battery does not fix that — it just gives you somewhere to put a surplus you do not have.

2

The Value Is in the Evening

Every kilowatt-hour you store and use at night is one you are not buying at retail rates. If your household is out all day and home all evening, that is exactly the pattern batteries suit.

3

Blackout Backup Is a Separate Question

Not every battery keeps your house running in an outage, and the ones that do need specific wiring. If wet season blackouts are the reason you want one, say so upfront because it changes the design.

Battery Options

What we install and where each one fits.

Tesla Powerwall 3

13.5kWh with the inverter built into the unit, which simplifies the install and the wall space it needs.

  • 13.5kWh usable capacity
  • Inverter integrated into the unit
  • Strong all-round value
  • Suits most Darwin households

Battery retrofit to existing solar

The best-value job we do. Your panels are already there and producing.

  • Typically a one-day install
  • No need to touch the array
  • Existing inverter assessed first
  • Switchboard capacity checked

Solar and battery together

Designed as one system rather than bolted together, which usually works out better.

  • Sized as a single system
  • Both rebates applied
  • One install, one commissioning
  • Longer job, better result

Blackout protection

Keeping essential circuits running through a wet season outage.

  • Backup circuits nominated with you
  • Automatic changeover
  • Specific wiring required
  • Worth deciding before install

From Bill to Backup

How a battery job runs.

1

Leave Your Details

Name, number and what you need. We ring you back and ask for a recent bill, whether you already have solar, and roughly what size.

2

We Look at Your Evening Usage

That is what decides whether a battery pays and how big it should be.

3

We Come Out and Quote

Existing system, switchboard, wall space and backup circuits, gone over with you on site.

4

Install and Commission

Installed, tested, monitoring set up and backup circuits demonstrated.

Battery Retrofits Are the Best Job We Do

If you already have solar, adding a battery is quick, high-value work — usually a single day. You are not paying to install panels you already own, and everything the battery stores was going to be exported for a fraction of what you pay to buy it back. If you have had solar for a few years, this is the conversation worth having.

After extensive research and a number of quotes from different installers, these guys stood out. They were the most thorough when it came to preparing a quote, asking lots of questions and doing a detailed inspection of our property. I was left with no doubt about which system best suited our needs and why. If you want a genuine team of experts who take a measured and detailed approach to both system specification and installation, I can’t recommend Shane Frew and the rest of the Flynn’s Team enough.

Frequently asked questions.

What people ask about home batteries.

How much does the battery rebate actually cover?

Against the full installed system — battery, controller, switchgear, labour and commissioning — roughly forty per cent. Be wary of quotes implying much more; those usually compare the rebate against the battery module price alone rather than the installed cost. Compare quotes on the same basis.

Can I add a battery to solar I already have?

Yes, and it is the best-value job we do. Usually a single day, with the existing inverter and switchboard assessed first. Everything the battery stores was otherwise being exported for a low feed-in rate.

What size battery do I need?

It depends on your evening and overnight usage rather than your total consumption. A household running air conditioning into the night needs more storage than one that goes to bed early. We size from your actual usage pattern.

Will it keep my house running in a blackout?

Only if it is designed to. Not every battery provides backup, and those that do need specific wiring and nominated circuits. If wet season outages are your main reason, tell us upfront — it changes the design.

Which battery do you recommend?

The Powerwall 3 suits most Darwin households well — 13.5kWh with the inverter integrated, which keeps the installation tidy. But the right answer depends on your usage, your existing setup and whether you want backup. We will go through it rather than pushing one brand.

Is a battery worth it without solar?

Rarely. A battery stores power your panels produce. Without solar you are storing grid power, which only makes sense on particular tariffs. We will tell you straight if that is your situation.
