Electrical Fault Finding in Darwin.
When the safety switch keeps tripping or half the house has gone dark, resetting it is not a repair. Flynn’s isolates the circuit, finds what actually caused the fault and fixes it — usually on the same visit.
Common faults
We Find the Cause, Not Just the Symptom
A safety switch that trips is doing its job — something on that circuit is leaking current to earth. Pushing it back up does not change that, it just hides it until next time.
We isolate circuits, test properly and identify the actual cause. In Darwin that is very often water where it should not be: an outdoor circuit, a light fitting that has taken moisture, or storm damage nobody noticed.
Why Faults Get Missed
The difference between a reset and a repair.
Resetting Proves Nothing
A breaker that holds for two days and trips again has not been fixed. It has been postponed, and the fault is still live in between.
Intermittent Faults Need Method
Faults that come and go are the hardest to find and the most commonly given up on. Testing circuit by circuit is the only reliable way through.
The Board Is Often the Answer
In older Darwin homes the recurring fault is frequently the switchboard itself. We will tell you if that is what we find.
What We Get Called Out To
Electrical faults rarely fix themselves and very rarely get cheaper by waiting.
Safety switch keeps tripping
The most common call we get. Something on that circuit is leaking current, and finding which thing is the entire job.
- Trips immediately on reset
- Trips only when it rains
- Trips when one appliance runs
- Nothing obvious changed
No power to part of the house
Power in some rooms and not others usually points to one circuit or one connection rather than a supply problem.
- Half the house without power
- One room or one circuit dead
- Lights working, power points not
- Neighbours unaffected
Burning smell or sparking
Treat this as urgent. Turn off the main switch and call rather than waiting to see whether it happens again.
- Burning or hot plastic smell
- Scorch marks around an outlet
- Sparking when plugging in
- Anything warm to touch
Storm and water damage
Darwin’s wet season puts water into places that were dry for eight months, and the fault often shows up days later.
- Fault started after a storm
- Water in an outdoor fitting
- Roof leak near wiring or lights
- Corroded outdoor circuits

From Call to Fixed
What happens when you ring us about a fault.
Leave Your Details
What is tripping, when it started, and what you have already tried. It usually tells us where to start.
We Isolate and Test
Circuit by circuit until we find the actual cause rather than guessing at the likely one.
We Explain What We Found
In plain terms, including whether it is a one-off or a sign of something bigger.
We Repair It
Most faults are fixed on the same visit. Anything larger is quoted before we proceed.
When the Switchboard Is the Real Problem
Recurring faults in older Darwin homes very often trace back to the board itself — ceramic fuses, no RCD protection, or circuits carrying far more than they were designed for. If that is what we find, we will show you and quote it separately rather than patching around it.

Frequently asked questions.
What most people want to know when something has gone wrong.
How quickly can you get here?
Call us and we will give you an honest answer on the day. If there is a burning smell, sparking or anything hot to touch, turn off the main switch first and tell us when you call — that changes the priority.
Why does my safety switch keep tripping?
It is doing its job — something is leaking current to earth. Common causes in Darwin are water in an outdoor circuit or fitting, a failing appliance, insulation damage, or a light fitting that has taken moisture. Finding which one is the whole point of the call-out.
Will you fix it on the same visit?
Usually. Our vans carry the common parts so most faults are repaired then and there. If it needs a part we do not stock or turns into a larger job, we will explain the options and quote it before doing anything.
Is it safe to just keep resetting it?
No. A safety switch that keeps tripping is telling you there is a genuine fault. Repeatedly resetting it does not fix anything and can leave a real hazard live in the meantime.
What if the switchboard turns out to be the problem?
It often is, particularly in older Darwin homes with ceramic fuses and no RCD protection. We will show you what we have found and quote the upgrade separately so you can decide, rather than bundling it in.
Do you charge to come out?
Yes, there is an attendance fee for a call-out, and we will confirm it with you on the phone before we come. Quotes for follow-on work are free.
