Common requests
Compliance Without the Paperwork Is Not Compliance
Plenty of people have had alarms installed and have nothing to show for it. If your property manager, insurer or a buyer asks, you need a record of what was installed, when, and that it was tested.
Every visit comes with that documentation. For portfolios we report on the lot together rather than sending paperwork one property at a time.
What Owners Often Do Not Know
Three things worth understanding before booking.
Alarms Expire
Smoke alarms have a manufacturer’s service life, commonly around ten years from the date stamped on the unit. After that the sensor is unreliable even though it still beeps when tested.
Interconnection Matters Most at Night
A standalone alarm in the garage does not wake anyone at the other end of the house. Interconnected alarms all sound together, which is the entire point.
Removed Batteries Are the Real Risk
An alarm chirping at 3am gets its battery pulled and never replaced. If that has happened at your place, treat it as urgent rather than annoying.
When Alarms Need Attention
Alarms give very little warning before they stop being useful.
Chirping or beeping
Usually a flat backup battery, and it almost always starts in the early hours because the overnight temperature drop affects battery voltage.
- Intermittent chirp every minute or so
- Started overnight
- Battery replaced and it continues
- Unit near end of service life
Age and replacement
If you do not know how old they are, they are probably due. The manufacture date is printed on the unit.
- Ten years or older
- Age unknown
- Yellowed or discoloured casing
- Never replaced since the house was built
Rental and compliance
Landlords and property managers have obligations, and the documentation matters as much as the hardware.
- New tenant moving in
- Managing agent has requested a check
- Buying or selling a property
- Multiple properties to coordinate
Placement and interconnection
Alarms in the wrong place, too few of them, or not interconnected are all common in older homes.
- Only one alarm in the house
- No alarm in hallways near bedrooms
- Alarms not interconnected
- Alarm removed and never refitted

Already Having Electrical Work Done?
If we are on site for a switchboard, fans or lighting, alarms take very little extra time. Bundling avoids paying a second attendance, and it is the cheapest way to get a property fully sorted in one visit.
Great communication, great work, fair prices. They told us they do domestic electrical work so we’ll definitely be contacting them for future works. Highly recommended.— Alexander G.
Fabulous speedy service and was able to fit in with my limited availability! So happy!— Melinda B.
Friendly, professional and excellent service. Will recommend to anyone, and will use again!— Kerry B.
Frequently asked questions.
What owners and property managers ask most.
How often do smoke alarms need replacing?
Smoke alarms have a manufacturer’s service life, typically around ten years from the date stamped on the unit, after which the sensor is no longer reliable regardless of whether it still beeps. We check the date and condition of what you have and tell you where it stands.
Do my alarms need to be interconnected?
Requirements vary depending on the age of the building, whether it is rented, and what work has been done. Interconnection is strongly worth having regardless — it means an alarm anywhere in the house sounds everywhere. We will confirm what applies to your property when we attend.
Hardwired or battery?
Hardwired alarms with a battery backup are the more robust option and are required in many situations. Long-life sealed battery units are used where hardwiring is impractical. We will advise which suits your property.
Can you do multiple rental properties?
Yes. We schedule portfolios together, coordinate tenant access and report back on the lot rather than property by property. It is considerably cheaper per property than booking them individually.
Do I get a certificate or report?
Yes. You get documentation covering what was installed, tested and found, suitable for your records, your managing agent or your insurer.
Why does my alarm chirp at night?
Usually a flat backup battery, and it tends to start in the early hours because the temperature drop affects battery voltage. If the unit is near the end of its service life it is worth replacing rather than just changing the battery.
