Hot Water & Appliance Circuits in Darwin.
Electric hot water, oven and cooktop circuits, appliance connections and power to sheds and outbuildings. Flynn’s sizes the circuit properly the first time, so your new appliance does not spend its life tripping the board.
Common jobs
The Appliance Usually Is Not the Problem
A brand new oven that trips the power every time you use it is very rarely faulty. New ovens, and induction cooktops especially, draw considerably more than whatever they replaced.
If the existing circuit was never rated for that load, it will trip regardless of which brand you buy. Have the circuit checked before you send the appliance back.
Where It Goes Wrong
The three most common mistakes we get called to fix.
Undersized Circuits
By far the most common. The old appliance drew less, the circuit was never upgraded, and the new one trips constantly.
No Spare Way on the Board
Heavy appliance circuits need somewhere to land. Older Darwin boards frequently have nothing spare, which is discovered on delivery day.
Sheds Wired for Nothing
A sub-main sized for a light and one outlet cannot run tools, a fridge and air conditioning. Upgrading later means trenching twice.
What We Get Called For
Appliance and hot water electrical, where small oversights become recurring problems.
Hot water systems

Ovens and cooktops
New kitchen appliances almost always need more than the circuit that was there before.

- Separate oven and cooktop supplies
- Appliance connection and testing
Appliances tripping
If one appliance trips the board every time it runs, that is a circuit or protection issue worth diagnosing.
- Trips on start-up
- Trips partway through a cycle

- Started after a new appliance arrived
Sheds and outbuildings
Sub-mains to sheds, garages, granny flats and pump sheds, sized for what you actually intend to run.
- Shed on an extension lead

Heavy Circuits Need Somewhere to Land
Ovens, induction cooktops, hot water and shed sub-mains all need a spare way and adequate capacity at the switchboard. Older Darwin boards often have neither, which is why so many of these jobs turn into a switchboard conversation. We check first so it is not a surprise on the day.

Frequently asked questions.
What most people want to know before booking.
Is hot water an electrical or plumbing job?
Usually both. The plumber handles the unit and the water side, the electrician handles the circuit, isolation, tariff and timer wiring. We coordinate with your plumber so it happens in one go rather than two trips each.
My new oven keeps tripping the power — is it faulty?
Often not. New ovens and especially induction cooktops draw considerably more than what they replaced, and the existing circuit may never have been rated for it. Have the circuit checked before you return the appliance.
Can you install a circuit for a new cooktop?
Yes. Induction cooktops in particular usually need a dedicated, correctly sized circuit. Give us the model number when we ring and we can tell you what it requires before it is delivered.
Can you run power to a shed or granny flat?
Yes. We size the sub-main for what you actually plan to run out there — tools, a fridge, air conditioning, a welder — rather than the minimum, because upgrading it later means doing the trench twice.
Do you supply the hot water unit?
We handle the electrical side. The unit itself normally comes through your plumber or supplier, and we coordinate with them so the changeover happens without either trade waiting on the other.
Will I need a switchboard upgrade?
Sometimes. Heavy appliance circuits need a spare way and adequate capacity, and older Darwin boards often have neither. We check before quoting so it is not a surprise on the day.

New appliance tripping the power?
Have the circuit checked before you send it back. It is usually not the appliance.
