EV Charger Installation in Darwin.
A proper wall charger fills the car overnight instead of over three days, and it does it safely. The install itself is straightforward — what decides the price is whether your switchboard has the capacity to feed it.
Common questions
The Charger Is the Easy Part
An EV charger is a large continuous load — it runs at close to full draw for hours, which is unusual for a domestic circuit. It needs its own circuit, correctly sized cable, and a switchboard with the capacity and a spare way to feed it.
In a newer home that is usually straightforward. In a sixty-year-old Darwin house still on its original board, the charger is the cheap part of the job. We check before quoting so nobody gets a surprise.
Getting It Right
Three decisions worth making deliberately.
Charger Size vs Your Car
There is no point paying for a charger faster than your car can accept. We match it to the vehicle rather than selling you headroom you cannot use.
Charge Off Your Own Roof
Charging on solar during the day is dramatically cheaper than charging off the grid at night. If you have solar, or are planning it, that should shape the choice.
Load Management Beats an Upgrade Sometimes
Where board capacity is tight, a charger that backs off when the house is drawing heavily can avoid a full switchboard upgrade. Worth assessing before assuming the worst.
What Decides the Job
Four things we look at before quoting.
Your switchboard
The single biggest factor in what an EV charger installation costs.
- Spare capacity available
- Main switch and supply rating
- RCD protection present
- Age and condition of the board
Cable run and location
Where the charger goes versus where the board is.
- Distance from board to charger
- Garage, carport or external wall
- Cable route and access
- Weather exposure if outside
Your car and charging habits
Determines what size charger actually makes sense.
- Vehicle onboard charger limit
- Daily driving distance
- Single or three phase available
- Overnight versus daytime charging
Solar, now or later
Changes the charger choice, not just the wiring.
- Existing solar system size
- Solar-aware charging capability
- Charging on generation
- Planning solar in future

Charge It on Your Own Power
An EV is the largest new load most households add, and charging it off the grid at night is the most expensive way to do it. If you have solar, or are considering it, the charger should be chosen and the system sized with the car in mind. Flynn’s does both, so we can look at it as one problem.
Needed some electrical work done in a short time period. Shane came out, checked what needed doing, was prompt and professional. Anthony came 2 days later and did the work very professionally. Highly recommended, 10/10.— David B.
Great communication, great work, fair prices. They told us they do domestic electrical work so we’ll definitely be contacting them for future works. Highly recommended.— Alexander G.
I am happy with the outcome, tripping switch and power points fixed. Shane is good and professional with providing the desired outcome.— Clayton H.
Frequently asked questions.
What people ask about EV charger installation.
How much does an EV charger installation cost in Darwin?
The charger itself is fairly predictable. The variable is your switchboard — if it has capacity and a spare way, the install is straightforward. If it is an original older board with nothing spare, the upgrade is the bigger part of the job. We check first so the quote is real.
Is there still a rebate for EV chargers in the NT?
No. The NT Electric Vehicle Charger Grant Scheme closed at the end of December 2025. NT stamp duty concessions on the vehicles themselves run to mid-2027, but they do not apply to the charger or its installation.
Do I need three phase?
Only if your car can use it and you want faster charging. Most homes are single phase and a 7kW charger fills the average car comfortably overnight. Three phase is worth it for high daily distances or a vehicle that can take it.
Can I just use the lead that came with the car?
You can, and it is very slow. Those leads are designed as an emergency option rather than daily use, and running one continuously off a general power circuit is not what that circuit was built for. A dedicated charger is safer and far quicker.
Can I charge from my solar?
Yes, with a solar-aware charger. It is by a wide margin the cheapest way to run an EV. Worth factoring in when choosing the charger rather than adding it afterwards.
What if my switchboard cannot handle it?
Two options — upgrade the board, or use a charger with load management that backs off when the house is drawing heavily. The second sometimes avoids an upgrade entirely. We will tell you which applies to you.
