Common reasons people upgrade
Honest Advice Before You Commit
A switchboard upgrade is not a small job, and plenty of boards do not need replacing yet. We would rather tell you that than sell you one.
When we ring you, we will ask for a photo of the inside of your board. That usually tells us straight away whether it is worth worrying about. Every board is different though, so the quote comes from us coming out and going over it with you.
What an Upgrade Actually Changes
Three things you get that an old board cannot give you.
Whole-Home Protection
When a board is replaced, the wiring rules require RCD protection across the circuits it feeds. Protection stops being partial.
Room to Grow
We size the new board with spare ways so adding air conditioning, solar, a battery or an EV charger later does not mean upgrading twice.
Something You Can Read
Every circuit tested and labelled properly, so the next person who opens it — including you — knows what everything does.
Signs Your Switchboard Needs Attention
Most switchboards give plenty of warning before they become a problem. These are the ones worth acting on.
Old ceramic or rewireable fuses
If your board still has porcelain fuses with fuse wire, it predates modern circuit protection entirely and almost certainly has no RCD protection.
- Porcelain fuse holders you pull out
- Fuse wire rather than switches
- No safety switches anywhere on the board
- Common in Darwin homes built before the 1990s
No safety switches
Circuit breakers protect the wiring. Safety switches protect people. Plenty of older boards have the first and not the second.
- Breakers present but no RCDs
- Only one circuit protected
- Power circuits covered, lighting not
- Whole-home protection after an upgrade
No spare capacity
A full board blocks everything you might want to add, and that is usually when people discover the problem.
- No spare ways for a new circuit
- Solar or battery quote blocked
- EV charger cannot be added
- Air conditioning needs its own circuit
Visible damage or heat
Anything scorched, rusted, buzzing or warm to touch should be looked at rather than watched.
- Scorch marks or discolouration
- Rust or corrosion in the enclosure
- Buzzing or crackling sounds
- Board warm to the touch

Ceramic fuses: what they are and why yours needs replacing
A fuse board protects your house. A safety switch protects the people in it. Most old boards only have one of those.

That is not a faulty switch. It is water in a circuit, and resetting it is not a fix.

Frequently asked questions.
What most people want to know before committing to a switchboard upgrade.
How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in Darwin?
It depends on the size of the board, single or three phase, the number of circuits, the condition of the existing wiring, meter position and whether the backing board needs replacing. Flynn’s quotes the complete job upfront so there are no surprises once we start.
How do I know if mine actually needs replacing?
The clearest signs are ceramic or rewireable fuses, no safety switches, no spare space, or visible rust and scorching. Leave your details and we’ll ring you. A photo of the inside of your board is usually enough for an honest read on whether it needs doing now or can wait. Either way the quote comes from us coming out and going over it with you — they’re always different.
How long does it take and will my power be off?
Most single-phase domestic upgrades are completed in a day. Your power will be off for a good part of that, so it’s worth planning around. We’ll confirm the timeframe and the outage window before the day.
Will I get safety switches on everything?
Yes. When a switchboard is replaced, the wiring rules require RCD protection on the final subcircuits it supplies. This is one of the biggest practical benefits of the upgrade — protection across the whole home rather than a couple of circuits.
Do I need an upgrade before solar, a battery or an EV charger?
Often, yes. Older boards frequently have no spare ways, no main switch capacity, or no RCD provision to support the addition. We can check the board before you commit to solar or EV charging and tell you what’s required.
What about older boards with asbestos backing?
Asbestos backing boards are common in older Darwin homes. If we find one, we’ll tell you before starting and handle it through the correct process. It’s not a reason to avoid the upgrade, but it does need to be managed properly.
