Ducted Air Conditioning Darwin | Installation & Zoning
Ducted air conditioning Darwin

Ducted Air Conditioning in Darwin.

One system, every room, no boxes on the walls. Ducted air conditioning suits larger homes and new builds where you want the whole house comfortable and the hardware out of sight — and zoning means you are not paying to cool rooms nobody is in.

Zoning Is What Makes Ducted Affordable to Run

An unzoned ducted system cools the whole house whenever it runs, including four bedrooms nobody is in. In Darwin, where the system runs eight months a year, that is a very expensive habit.

Proper zoning splits the house into areas you can run independently — living areas during the day, bedrooms at night. The system only conditions what you are actually using, which is usually the difference between a ducted system people love and one they are afraid to turn on.

✓Zone design based on how you live
✓Duct sizing and layout done properly
✓Roof space and access assessed first
✓Electrical capacity confirmed upfront

Ducted Done Right

Where ducted systems succeed or disappoint.

1

Duct Sizing and Layout

Undersized or badly routed ducting is the most common cause of a room at the end of the run never getting cold. It cannot be fixed afterwards without pulling ceilings apart.

2

Insulation in a Darwin Roof

Roof spaces up here get brutally hot. Ductwork that is poorly insulated loses a large share of its cooling before the air reaches the room.

3

Zone Control That Suits You

Zones should match how the house is actually used — not an arbitrary split. We work that out with you before anything is ordered.

Is Ducted Right for Your Home?

Honest guidance on where ducted works and where splits are the better answer.

Where ducted wins

Larger homes, new builds and anyone who wants the house comfortable throughout without hardware on every wall.

  • Whole-home comfort from one system
  • No indoor units on the walls
  • Quieter in the living space
  • Adds value on larger homes

Where splits win

Smaller homes, staged budgets, or where only a couple of rooms genuinely need conditioning.

  • Lower upfront cost
  • Can be added room by room
  • One unit failing does not affect the rest
  • Simpler and cheaper to service

New builds and extensions

Far cheaper to design in than retrofit. Duct routes, returns and zone layout are trivial before the ceilings go on.

  • Design in at plan stage
  • Duct routes planned with the builder
  • Electrical and board capacity included
  • Coordinated with the build program

Retrofitting an existing home

Very doable in most Darwin homes, but roof access, ceiling space and the switchboard all need checking first.

  • Roof space and access assessed
  • Return air location planned
  • Switchboard capacity checked
  • Staged around your household

Ducted and Solar Go Together Well

A ducted system is the largest electrical load most homes have, and it runs hardest in the middle of the day when solar is producing most. Flynn’s does both, so we can size a solar system with the ducted load properly accounted for rather than guessing at it.

After extensive research and a number of quotes from different installers, these guys stood out. They were the most thorough when it came to preparing a quote, asking lots of questions and doing a detailed inspection of our property. I was left with no doubt about which system best suited our needs and why. If you want a genuine team of experts who take a measured and detailed approach to both system specification and installation, I can’t recommend Shane Frew and the rest of the Flynn’s Team enough.

Frequently asked questions.

What most people want to know about ducted air conditioning.

How much does ducted air conditioning cost in Darwin?

Considerably more than a split system, and it varies widely with the size of the home, the number of zones, roof access and whether it is a new build or a retrofit. We quote after a site assessment rather than over the phone, because the variables genuinely matter.

Is ducted expensive to run?

Unzoned, yes. Properly zoned, it is competitive, because you are only conditioning the areas you are using. Zoning is the single biggest factor in what a ducted system costs you each year.

Can ducted be retrofitted to an existing house?

Usually. The limits are roof space, ceiling height and access for ductwork and returns. We assess that on site before quoting so there are no surprises.

How many zones do I need?

Most Darwin homes work well with living areas and bedrooms split, sometimes with a third zone for a rumpus or office. We work it out from how you actually use the house, not from the floor plan alone.

Ducted or multiple splits?

Splits are cheaper upfront and easier to service; ducted is quieter, tidier and better for whole-home comfort. If only two or three rooms need it, splits usually win. If you want the whole house comfortable, ducted usually does.

Will my switchboard handle it?

Ducted is a substantial electrical load and many older Darwin boards cannot support it without an upgrade. We check capacity as part of quoting.
