Sized for Darwin, Not a Brochure
Almost every air conditioning complaint we get called to traces back to sizing. Too small and it runs flat out all afternoon without ever getting there. Too big and it cools fast, cuts out, and never runs long enough to pull the humidity out — so the room ends up cold and clammy at once.
Darwin needs more careful sizing than anywhere down south because we are fighting humidity as much as heat. We work from the actual room, the actual orientation and how you actually use the space.
What We Do
From a single bedroom split to a multi-site maintenance program.
Install
Split systems, ducted and multi-head, sized properly and commissioned rather than just connected.
Service
Deep cleaning of the barrel fan, coil and drain — not a wipe over the filters — plus electrical and refrigerant checks.
Repair
Fault finding on all brands, with an honest answer on whether a unit is worth repairing or past it.
Choosing the Right System
Four common situations and what usually suits them.
One or two rooms
Split systems are cheaper upfront, easy to service and can be added over time.
- Bedrooms and living areas
- Add one room at a time
- Simple to service and repair
- One unit failing does not affect the rest
Whole home comfort
Ducted keeps the hardware out of sight and the whole house comfortable, provided it is zoned properly.
- No indoor units on the walls
- Zoning cuts running cost
- Best designed into a new build
- Quieter in living areas
Nowhere for outdoor units
Multi-head runs several indoor heads from one condenser — the answer for units and townhouses.
- One outdoor unit only
- Suits strata and townhouses
- Independent room control
- Whole system down if the condenser fails
Keeping what you have
Regular servicing costs far less than the repairs it prevents, particularly in this climate.
- Service at least every two years
- Ideally annually before the build-up
- Cleaning fixes most smell complaints
- Repair vs replace advice, honestly

Air Conditioning Is an Electrical Job Too
Every system needs a dedicated circuit and a switchboard with capacity to feed it — and plenty of older Darwin boards have neither. Flynn’s holds both licences and does solar, so we can look at the whole picture: the system, the board, and whether running it off your own roof makes sense.

That smell is mould on the barrel fan and coil, behind the filters where a quick clean never reaches.

Frequently asked questions.
What Darwin homeowners ask most about air conditioning.
How often should air conditioning be serviced in Darwin?
At least once every two years, and preferably once a year. Do not leave it five years. Our humidity grows mould inside a split system far faster than a southern climate does, and units up here run most of the year rather than three months of it.
What size system do I need?
It depends on room size, ceiling height, insulation, window area and orientation, and how the room is used. Sizing matters more here than down south because humidity is half the problem — an oversized unit causes as many complaints as an undersized one.
Split, ducted or multi-head?
Splits for one or two rooms and staged budgets. Ducted for whole-home comfort with the hardware out of sight. Multi-head when there is nowhere to put several outdoor units. We will tell you honestly which suits your place.
Do you repair all brands?
Yes. We are a Fujitsu Authorised Service Partner, which gives better parts access on Fujitsu, and we service, repair and install all the other major brands.
Will I need electrical work as well?
Often. Air conditioning needs a dedicated circuit, and many older Darwin boards have no spare capacity. We check that when quoting rather than discovering it on installation day.
Can I run air conditioning off solar?
Yes, and it is a good match — the hottest part of the day is also the most productive part of the solar day. Because we do both, we can size a solar system with your actual cooling load accounted for.
