Air Conditioner Replacement in Darwin.
When a system is past economic repair, replacing it properly is cheaper than nursing it through another wet season. Flynn’s removes the old unit, recommends a suitable replacement and updates whatever the new system actually needs.

When Replacing Beats Repairing
There is a point where money spent on an old system stops being an investment and starts being a subscription. Compressors, control boards and coil failures on a ten-year-old unit typically cost a meaningful fraction of a new system, with no warranty and no efficiency gain.
We will give you the actual numbers rather than a rule of thumb — what the repair costs, what a replacement costs, and what the difference in running cost looks like over the eight months a year it runs in Darwin.
What Replacement Involves
More than swapping a box on the wall.
The Old Unit Comes Out Properly
Refrigerant recovered as required, unit removed and disposed of, mounting and penetrations made good rather than left for you.
Pipework and Wiring Checked
Existing pipework is not always suitable for a new system. We check rather than assume, because reusing the wrong pipe run undoes the whole upgrade.
Sized for Now, Not Then
The old unit’s capacity is not automatically right. Rooms change, walls come out, insulation gets added. We size it fresh.
Signs a System Is Done
Most systems tell you well before they finally stop.
Age and efficiency
Systems more than about ten years old are usually well behind current efficiency, and every year of Darwin running hours widens the gap.
- Ten years or older
- Running noticeably longer to cool
- Power bills climbing each year
- Older refrigerant types
Repeated repairs
Two or three call-outs in a season is a pattern, not bad luck, and the money adds up faster than people expect.
- Multiple faults in one season
- Parts becoming difficult to source
- Compressor or control board failure
- Repair quote a large share of replacement
Performance
Cooling that has quietly got worse over years is easy to normalise until a new system shows you the difference.
- Never quite gets the room down
- Struggles in the afternoon
- Humidity not being removed
- Uneven cooling across the room
Planned upgrades
Replacing on your terms is always cheaper and less stressful than replacing in a heatwave.
- Renovating and doing it now
- Adding solar and sizing for it
- Whole-home upgrade
- Selling or renting the property

From Assessment to New System
How a replacement runs.
Assess What You Have
Age, condition, fault history and whether it is genuinely past economic repair.
Compare the Numbers
Repair cost against replacement cost, with the running-cost difference included.
Remove and Replace
Old unit out and disposed of, new system installed, pipework and wiring updated as needed.
Commission and Hand Over
Tested under load and explained, so you actually know how to run the new one.
The Right Time to Add Solar
If you are replacing air conditioning anyway, it is the natural moment to look at solar — the new system’s load is known, the electrician is already on site, and a battery can cover the evening peak. Flynn’s does all three, so we can show you the combined numbers rather than three separate quotes.

After extensive research and a number of quotes from different installers, these guys stood out. They were the most thorough when it came to preparing a quote, asking lots of questions and doing a detailed inspection of our property. I was left with no doubt about which system best suited our needs and why. If you want a genuine team of experts who take a measured and detailed approach to both system specification and installation, I can’t recommend Shane Frew and the rest of the Flynn’s Team enough.— Sandra Y.
Great communication, great work, fair prices. They told us they do domestic electrical work so we’ll definitely be contacting them for future works. Highly recommended.— Alexander G.
Frequently asked questions.
What most people want to know about replacing a system.
Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?
It comes down to the age of the unit, the cost of the repair and what a replacement would save in running cost. If a repair is a large fraction of a new system on a unit approaching ten years, replacement almost always wins. We will give you both numbers rather than steering you.
Can you reuse the existing pipework?
Sometimes, but not always — it depends on the pipe size, condition and the refrigerant the new system uses. We check rather than assume, because reusing unsuitable pipework causes problems that are expensive to unpick later.
Do you take the old unit away?
Yes. Refrigerant is recovered as required, the unit is removed and disposed of, and mounting points and penetrations are made good.
Will a new system actually be cheaper to run?
Usually noticeably, especially replacing something ten or more years old. In Darwin the system runs most of the year, so an efficiency improvement compounds far faster here than it would down south.
Should I replace all my units at once?
If they went in at the same time they will fail at around the same time, and doing them together is cheaper per unit. We will quote both ways so you can decide.
How long does a replacement take?
A straight like-for-like split replacement is usually half a day. If pipework, wiring or the switchboard needs updating it takes longer, and we will tell you that upfront.
