The Battery Rebate: What It Actually Covers

By Shane Frew · 03 August 2026 · Flynn’s Electrical, Air Con & Solar

The number people arrive with is usually far higher than the number that turns up on the invoice. Not because anyone is lying, but because the rebate is quoted against the battery and the quote is for a whole system.

The number that matters

In Darwin, the rebate works out at roughly 42% of the installed cost of the whole stack. Not 80%. Not the number you may have heard.

Both numbers can be quoted honestly, which is exactly what makes this confusing. The high percentage is calculated against the battery module on its own. The real job includes a lot more than the module.

What a battery job actually includes

When you buy “a battery”, you are buying a system:

  • The battery module itself
  • The inverter or controller that manages it — unless it is a unit with the inverter built in
  • Isolation, protection and the switchboard work to connect it
  • Mounting, cabling and conduit
  • Labour, which for a straight retrofit is around four hours with two people
  • Compliance, paperwork and network approvals

The rebate is calculated on the storage capacity. The rest of that list is real cost that the percentage does not scale with. Which is how a headline figure of 80% lands at about 42% of what you actually pay.

How to compare quotes properly: ask every installer for the total installed price including GST, and the rebate as a dollar figure, and the amount you pay on the day. If one quote is built on module price and another on installed price, you are not comparing anything.

Darwin gets a genuine advantage

The country is split into zones for solar, and Darwin sits in Zone 1 — the highest. For solar PV that means a zone rating of 1.622, against 1.185 in Melbourne.

That is not marketing. Same panels, same system, more certificates here than almost anywhere else, purely because of where we are. Add to that a roof that gets sun year round rather than four decent months, and the numbers here are genuinely better than the national conversation suggests.

Batteries are rated on a separate zone basis, which is one more reason the two parts of a quote need to be read separately.

Where the money actually is

Being straight about this: a battery on its own is a slower payback than solar on its own. What changes the picture is what you do with it — shifting your usage rather than just storing it, and whether you are on a tariff that makes that worth doing.

Retrofitting a battery to a system that already has solar is usually the better-value version, because the panels and much of the electrical work are already there and paid for.

Questions worth asking any installer

  • Is that price installed, including GST, or is it supply only?
  • Is the inverter or controller included, or is it separate?
  • What is the rebate in dollars, and what do I actually pay on the day?
  • Does the existing switchboard have room, or is that extra?
  • Who does the network application?
  • Who comes back if something goes wrong in three years?

That last one matters more than people think. Plenty of solar gets sold into Darwin by outfits without anyone here.

Why we quote it on site

Battery jobs live or die on the switchboard and where things can physically go. Whether there is room in the board, whether the existing solar inverter plays with what you are adding, where the battery can be mounted so it is not baking in afternoon sun — none of that can be answered off a photo.
