Home technology Darwin

Home Technology in Darwin.

EV charging, smart air conditioning control and energy monitoring. The common thread is that all of it needs a licensed electrician and a switchboard with capacity — which is the part most people find out about last.

It All Comes Back to the Switchboard

EV chargers, smart controls and monitoring all sound like technology purchases. In practice they are electrical jobs, and the thing that decides whether they are simple or expensive is what your switchboard can take.

There are sixty-year-old homes in Darwin still running their original boards. If that is you, the charger is not the hard part. We check capacity before quoting so the number you get is the real one.

✓Switchboard capacity confirmed before quoting
✓Solar-aware where it makes sense
✓Installed by the same team that does your electrical
✓Set up and explained, not just connected

What We Do in This Space

Three things worth having, honestly assessed.

1

EV Charging

A proper wall charger rather than a lead out a window. Sized to your car, your board and whether you want to charge off solar.

2

Smart Air Conditioning Control

Run an existing system from your phone, schedule it around solar production, and stop cooling an empty house all afternoon.

3

Energy Monitoring

Circuit-level visibility of where your power actually goes, which is usually somewhere other than where people assume.

Where It Fits Together

These work better as one system than three gadgets.

EV chargers

The biggest new load most homes add, and the one most likely to need board work.

  • Dedicated circuit sized for the charger
  • Switchboard capacity assessed
  • Solar-aware charging where available
  • Load management if capacity is tight

Smart aircon controls

Retrofit control to systems that were never smart to begin with.

  • Works with most existing systems
  • Scheduling and remote control
  • Run the aircon on solar
  • Useful for rentals and holiday houses

Energy monitoring

Facts instead of guesses about what is costing you money.

  • Circuit-level monitoring
  • Solar generation and consumption together
  • Identify the loads that surprise you
  • Data you can act on

Tied into solar

All three are more useful when the solar system is part of the picture.

  • Charge the car on generation
  • Run air conditioning on production
  • See self-use versus export
  • Sized as one system

How It Runs

Same as any electrical job — we look before we quote.

1

Leave Your Details

Charger, controls, monitoring, or all three. And whether you have solar.

2

We Check the Board

Capacity is what decides the price. We would rather find out now than on install day.

3

We Quote It

Complete, including any switchboard work required.

4

Install and Set Up

Installed, tested, connected to your phone and actually explained.

Best Done With Solar

Charging a car off the grid at night is convenient. Charging it off your own roof in the afternoon is considerably cheaper. Because Flynn’s does solar, batteries and electrical, we can look at the whole thing together rather than installing a charger now and discovering the solar system was sized without it.

Great communication, great work, fair prices. They told us they do domestic electrical work so we’ll definitely be contacting them for future works. Highly recommended.

Needed some electrical work done in a short time period. Shane came out, checked what needed doing, was prompt and professional. Anthony came 2 days later and did the work very professionally. Highly recommended, 10/10.

After extensive research and a number of quotes from different installers, these guys stood out. They were the most thorough when it came to preparing a quote, asking lots of questions and doing a detailed inspection of our property. I was left with no doubt about which system best suited our needs and why. If you want a genuine team of experts who take a measured and detailed approach to both system specification and installation, I can’t recommend Shane Frew and the rest of the Flynn’s Team enough.

Frequently asked questions.

What people ask about home technology.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade for any of this?

Often, for EV charging especially. A charger is a substantial continuous load and needs a dedicated circuit with capacity behind it. Older Darwin boards frequently have neither. We check before quoting rather than on the day.

Can I control an air conditioner that is not a smart model?

Usually yes. Retrofit controllers work with most existing split systems, which means you get app control and scheduling without replacing a perfectly good unit.

Is energy monitoring actually useful?

It is if you act on it. The value is finding the loads you did not expect — an old second fridge, a pool pump running longer than you thought, air conditioning running in an empty house. If you just want a nice graph, save your money.

Can I charge my car from solar?

Yes, with the right charger and setup. It is the cheapest way to run an EV by a wide margin. Worth designing it in rather than adding it later.

Do you install any brand?

We work with the main brands and will tell you honestly where one suits your setup better. We are not tied to a single manufacturer.

Is there still an NT rebate for EV chargers?

No. The NT charger grant closed at the end of 2025. NT stamp duty concessions on the vehicles themselves run to mid-2027, but that is separate and does not apply to the charger.
