Multi-Head Systems in Darwin.
One outdoor unit running two, three or more indoor heads. Multi-head suits homes where there is nowhere to put four separate outdoor units — units, townhouses, heritage frontages, or anywhere the neighbours are close.

The Trade-Off Worth Understanding
Multi-head solves a real problem — one outdoor unit instead of four — and the result looks far tidier. But everything runs off that one condenser, so if it fails, every room goes down at once rather than one.
Individual splits are more resilient and cheaper per room to repair. Multi-head is the right answer when outdoor space, appearance or body corporate rules make four separate units impossible. We will tell you honestly which situation you are in.
Where Multi-Head Makes Sense
It is a specific solution to a specific problem.
Nowhere to Put the Units
Townhouses, units and homes with narrow side access often physically cannot fit four condensers. Multi-head is frequently the only workable option.
Appearance and Body Corporate
One unit is far less visually intrusive, and many strata schemes limit how many outdoor units can go on a wall or roof.
Pipe Runs Get Complicated
Every head needs its own pipe run back to the one outdoor unit. Planning those routes before committing is what separates a tidy install from a messy one.
Multi-Head vs Separate Splits
Both are good answers. They answer different questions.
Choose multi-head when
Outdoor space, appearance or strata rules limit how many condensers you can install.
- Limited outdoor or side access
- Unit, townhouse or strata property
- Want a tidier external appearance
- Three or more rooms to condition
Choose separate splits when
You have the space and want resilience, simpler servicing and lower repair costs.
- One failure does not affect other rooms
- Cheaper to repair or replace individually
- Can be staged over time
- Simpler and cheaper to service
Capacity and load sharing
The outdoor unit is sized for the combined load, and running every head at once is what it has to cope with.
- Combined capacity sized properly
- Independent control per room
- Performance when all heads run
- Right-sized rather than over-specified
Installation considerations
More planning than a single split, because every pipe run has to get back to one point.
- Pipe routes planned in advance
- Cavity and ceiling access checked
- Dedicated circuit at the switchboard
- Drainage for every indoor head

One System, One Circuit, One Board
A multi-head condenser is a single substantial electrical load and needs a dedicated circuit with capacity to match. Older Darwin boards often have neither the spare way nor the headroom. Flynn’s does the electrical too, so the board is checked when we quote rather than on installation day.

Guides from our team on this kind of work.
After extensive research and a number of quotes from different installers, these guys stood out. They were the most thorough when it came to preparing a quote, asking lots of questions and doing a detailed inspection of our property. I was left with no doubt about which system best suited our needs and why. If you want a genuine team of experts who take a measured and detailed approach to both system specification and installation, I can’t recommend Shane Frew and the rest of the Flynn’s Team enough.— Sandra Y.
Great communication, great work, fair prices. They told us they do domestic electrical work so we’ll definitely be contacting them for future works. Highly recommended.— Alexander G.

Frequently asked questions.
What most people want to know about multi-head systems.
What is a multi-head system?
One outdoor condenser connected to several indoor units, each with its own controls. It gives you air conditioning in multiple rooms with only one unit outside.
Is multi-head cheaper than separate splits?
Not usually, upfront. It is chosen for space and appearance rather than cost. Separate splits are typically cheaper to buy, cheaper to repair and easier to service.
What happens if the outdoor unit fails?
Every connected room loses air conditioning at once. That is the main trade-off against separate splits, and it is worth weighing if you have somebody who genuinely cannot go without cooling.
Can each room be set to a different temperature?
Yes, each indoor head has its own control. There are limits when the system is heavily loaded, but for normal use each room runs independently.
How many heads can one outdoor unit run?
Commonly two to five depending on the model and the combined capacity required. We size the outdoor unit for the total load, not the number of heads.
Will my switchboard handle it?
It needs a dedicated circuit with adequate capacity. Many older Darwin boards do not have a spare way. We check as part of quoting.
