House Rewiring in Darwin.
There are sixty-year-old homes in Darwin still running their original wiring and their original switchboard. Rewiring is a big job and we will not pretend otherwise, but on a house that old it is usually the difference between patching problems forever and actually fixing them.
Common situations
When Rewiring Is Actually the Answer
Not every old house needs rewiring. Plenty of them need a switchboard upgrade and two circuits sorted out, and we will tell you that rather than quoting the big job.
But when the insulation is breaking down, when there are no earths where there should be, or when every call-out finds another problem on a different circuit, patching stops making sense. At that point you are spending real money on repairs that fix nothing permanently.
What We Find in Older Darwin Homes
Sixty years of heat, humidity and accumulated shortcuts.
Original Boards Still in Service
Sixty-year-old houses up here still running the board they were built with. Ceramic fuses, no RCDs, no spare capacity, and wiring to match.
Insulation Breaking Down
Old rubber and early PVC insulation goes brittle with decades of heat. Once it starts, disturbing the cable makes it worse, which is why faults multiply after someone works on it.
Additions Layered on Additions
Sleepouts, sheds, extensions and pergolas wired in over decades by whoever was around. Each one fine on its own, none of it designed as a whole.
Full Rewire or Partial?
Both are legitimate. It depends on the house and your budget.
Full rewire
Everything replaced back to a new board. The right call when the wiring is genuinely at the end of its life.
- All circuits replaced
- New switchboard with RCDs throughout
- Ceiling and wall access required
- Best done with the house empty or during a reno
Partial rewire
Worst circuits first, rest staged later. Spreads the cost without pretending the problem is solved.
- Target the failing circuits
- Board upgraded now, circuits over time
- Less disruption
- Clear plan for what is left
Rewire during a renovation
By far the cheapest time. Walls and ceilings are open anyway.
- Access is already there
- A fraction of the cost of retrofitting
- Rough in for future solar and EV
- Coordinated with the builder
What is involved
It is disruptive and we will be straight with you about that before you commit.
- Ceiling and wall access needed
- Power off in sections
- Patching and making good
- Certification at completion

From Assessment to Certificate
Rewiring starts with an honest look at whether you need it.
We Come Out and Look
Every rewire is different. We go through the house with you, check the board, the wiring and what has been added over the years.
Honest Recommendation
If a board upgrade and two circuits would do it, we will say so instead of quoting a rewire.
Scope and Quote
Full or partial, staged or in one hit, priced properly with the disruption explained.
Rewire, Test, Certify
Done in sections to keep the house liveable, then tested and certified.
Do It While the Walls Are Open
If you are renovating, this is the moment. Rewiring, the switchboard, air conditioning circuits and roughing in for future solar or EV charging all cost a fraction now against retrofitting later. Flynn’s does all of it, so it is one scope and one team rather than three trades arguing about sequence.

Guides from our team on this kind of work.
Needed some electrical work done in a short time period. Shane came out, checked what needed doing, was prompt and professional. Anthony came 2 days later and did the work very professionally. Highly recommended, 10/10.— David B.
I am happy with the outcome, tripping switch and power points fixed. Shane is good and professional with providing the desired outcome.— Clayton H.
After extensive research and a number of quotes from different installers, these guys stood out. They were the most thorough when it came to preparing a quote, asking lots of questions and doing a detailed inspection of our property. I was left with no doubt about which system best suited our needs and why. If you want a genuine team of experts who take a measured and detailed approach to both system specification and installation, I can’t recommend Shane Frew and the rest of the Flynn’s Team enough.— Sandra Y.
Frequently asked questions.
What people ask about rewiring.
How do I know if my house needs rewiring?
Age is the first clue — plenty of sixty-year-old Darwin homes are still on original wiring. Then it is the pattern: faults on different circuits, no earths where there should be, a board with ceramic fuses. But not every old house needs it, and we will tell you if a board upgrade and a couple of circuits would do.
How much does rewiring cost in Darwin?
It depends entirely on the size of the house, access, construction and whether it is full or partial. Besser brick core filled construction changes the job considerably compared to a timber-framed house. These are always site visits — we come out, go over it with you, then quote.
How long does it take and can I live there?
Usually a week or more depending on size. We work in sections so the house stays liveable, but there will be days with power off in parts of the house. We will map that out before we start.
Can I do it in stages?
Yes, and plenty of people do. We prioritise the circuits that actually need it, get the switchboard sorted, and plan the rest. It costs a bit more overall but it spreads the hit.
Will you make good afterwards?
We patch access holes and leave it tidy. Full cosmetic restoration — repainting, cornice work — is usually a separate trade and we will be clear about where our work stops.
Should I rewire before or after renovating?
During. If walls and ceilings are open anyway the access is free, and it is dramatically cheaper. Talk to us at plan stage rather than after the plasterboard is on.
