What a Switchboard Upgrade Actually Costs in Darwin, and Why
Nobody in Darwin puts a number on this, which is why everyone rings around getting vague answers. So here it is: most switchboard upgrades we do land between $2,000 and $3,500. This post explains what moves the price inside that range, what you get for it, and when we will tell you not to spend the money yet.
Why there is a range at all
Every board is different once the cover comes off. Two houses on the same street, built the same year, can be a thousand dollars apart. That is not the electrician being cagey. It is four things:
- How many circuits the house has. Every circuit gets its own breaker and safety switch protection in the new board. A two-bedroom unit with six circuits is a smaller job than a family home with fourteen, a pool and a shed.
- What the old board is. Ceramic fuses everywhere means everything goes. A newer board that just needs safety switches added is a different, smaller conversation.
- The backing panel. Plenty of older Darwin boards are mounted on an asbestos panel. That changes how we work and how the old panel has to be handled and disposed of. It is routine for us, but it is part of the price.
- What we find behind it. Sixty-year-old boards usually come with sixty years of history. Overloaded circuits doubling up on one fuse, cooked connections, handyman additions that were never legal. Most of it we sort as part of the job. Occasionally something bigger turns up, and we tell you before touching it.
What you are actually paying for
A new board with proper circuit breaker and safety switch protection on every circuit — not just the power points, everything. Labour to strip the old gear, transfer and sort every circuit, and test the lot properly before we leave. The paperwork that says it was done right. And the old board gone, including the asbestos panel where there is one.
What it usually does not include is rewiring the house. The board is the distribution point — if the wiring beyond it has problems, that is a separate conversation, and we will have it with you straight rather than burying it in a bigger invoice.
When we will tell you not to bother yet: if your board already has circuit breakers and safety switches on every circuit and nothing is cooking, you probably do not need us. We can definitely upgrade it if you want, but I don’t want you spending money for no reason. If there are years left in it, we will say so.
Why the old ones genuinely have to go
This is the blunt bit. Ceramic fuse boards were fine for a house running a fridge, a kettle and some lights. A Darwin house now runs multiple air conditioners most of the year, plus everything else modern life plugs in. Old switchboards are genuinely a problem. They cause fires, and a fuse board gives you no safety switch protection — the thing that trips in a fraction of a second when electricity goes through a person instead of an appliance. Especially with kids in the house, that is not a maybe-later item.
Darwin makes it worse. A lot of houses up here are sixty years old and still running their original board. Heat, humidity and six decades of load the board was never designed for. When we open them up, the story is usually written in the connections — heat marks, brittle insulation, repairs on repairs.
The signs yours is due
- Ceramic fuses — the white plugs with fuse wire in them
- No safety switches, or one safety switch covering the whole house
- Fuses that blow or breakers that trip regularly
- Warm smell or heat marks around the board
- Lights that dip when the aircon starts
- Any board old enough that you are not sure — that is usually the answer
How the quote works
Get in touch first — give us a call or use the form. A photo of your board helps us know what we are looking at before we come out, and once you have contacted us we will give you a mobile number to text it to or an email address to send it to. Front cover on is fine.
Then we come out, look at the board properly, and go over the job with you. The site visit and the quote are free. Every board is different once the cover comes off, which is why we do not price them off a photo alone — the photo starts the conversation, the visit finishes it. Once you have the number, it is the number.
