What people ask about exhaust fans.
Will an exhaust fan fix my bathroom mould?
Usually, if it is sized correctly and actually ducted to outside. Most mould problems we see in Darwin bathrooms come down to no fan, a fan too small for the room, or a fan venting into the roof cavity.
Does the fan have to vent outside?
It should. Venting into the roof space just moves the moisture somewhere you cannot see it, and in this climate that means damp insulation and mould in the roof. We duct to an external vent.
What size fan do I need?
It depends on the room volume. A unit sized for a small ensuite will not clear a family bathroom. We work it out from the room rather than fitting whatever is in the box.
Are 3-in-1 units worth it?
They are convenient and popular. Worth knowing they draw more than a plain fan, so the circuit needs checking, and the heat function gets very little use in Darwin compared to down south.
Can you replace an existing fan?
Yes, and it is a common job. Often we find the fan was fine and the ducting was never connected properly, which is worth fixing at the same time.
How long does it take?
A straight replacement is usually an hour or two. A new installation needing ducting and an external vent takes longer, and we will confirm before the day.
